Vietnam is a popular tourist destination for those seeking breathtaking landscapes, world-famous beaches and impeccable cuisine. But despite the beautiful aspects of Vietnamese culture, there is also a great need for international volunteers, particularity in Vietnam’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City. World Endeavors places international volunteers with local shelters supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS. Because HIV/AIDS is a highly stigmatized illness in Vietnam, society often attempts to hide these children in shadows. These children lack not only nutritious meals and adequate education, but more importantly, they lack families to love and care for them unconditionally. These shelters work to provide these essentials to children in need, and require the assistance from international volunteers like you!
World Endeavors volunteers in Vietnam can expect their days to be a combination of meaningful volunteer work, cultural experiences, and free time for relaxation and reflection. Volunteers begin their day with breakfast at the volunteer house, which is provided by the local caretaker. This is a great way to experience authentic Vietnamese cuisine with volunteers from all over the world!
At the shelter, volunteers become involved in a variety of different tasks. We mainly want our volunteers to build meaningful friendships with the children at the shelter though playing games, helping with homework, and teaching English classes. Other assistance may be needed with tasks such as preparing meals and assisting the local staff.
The weekends are a great time to see all that Vietnam has to offer. Optional weekend trips are available at an additional cost. Weekend excursions include trips to Mekong Delta, the southern most region of Vietnam where the Mekong River reaches the South China Sea. The Mekong Delta region offers a maze of river ways for visitors to tour by boat, making stops at the famous floating markets.
In keeping with our week of exciting new program additions, we’d like to announce just one more: Volunteering in Vietnam! This beautiful country, situated along the South China Sea, offers its visitors a rich cultural experience, delicious cuisine, and many opportunities for adventure. We’re thrilled about this opportunity, as well as the amazing experiences that our volunteers will be able to take part in.
Volunteers will be based in the exciting, fast-paced Ho Chi Minh City, a perfect example of the energy that exudes from the people and places of Vietnam. Volunteers will have the opportunity to choose from four available projects in which to participate:
- Childcare & Orphanage Assistance
- Special Education
Please join us in welcoming Vietnam to our list of meaningful and culturally immersive volunteer programs. For more information about Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, and our available volunteer projects, please visit our website or contact a World Endeavors Advisor:
As we welcome our newest Volunteer Program in Sri Lanka, we’d like to feature one of the many unique projects available to participants: our Wildlife Conservation Project. This specific project provides participants with the opportunity to volunteer at an Elephant Orphanage. The orphanage is designed to help care for baby elephants who have been abandoned in the jungle without their mothers, as well as to help old and injured elephants. Established in 1975, the sanctuary is currently home to over 80 elephants. Not only will volunteers help care for these amazing animals, but they will also help enrich the lives of the care takers’ children through English teaching classes and other community projects. This project blends a love for helping people with a love for helping animals.
Volunteer responsibilities are typically divided into four main parts: taking care of the elephants, working on an eco-farm project, assisting with the mobile veterinary unit and aiding with an after-school English program for the community. Typical daily duties will include:
- Cleaning elephant enclosures
- Managing the garden and assisting with landscaping work
- Helping with bathing, feeding and grooming the elephants
- Assisting veterinary doctors as needed
- Teaching the children in the community
This volunteer opportunity offers a very unique experience to participants. We currently offer many wonderful Wildlife Conservation projects in other countries, and this program is no different. This specific program is perfect for volunteers of all ages who have a love for animals. Volunteers will interact directly with these magnificent animals and deeply engage with an entire community. For more information about the project, please visit our website or contact a World Endeavors Advisor.
Following our two new programs in India, we’re excited to announce another new program in a brand new country: Sri Lanka! This small island off the southern coast of India is a relatively undiscovered gem. Sri Lanka boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, over 2000 years of rich culture and diverse geographical features ranging from dazzling beaches to lush rainforests to rolling hills. We can’t wait for our volunteers to experience all the delights and wonders Sri Lanka has to offer.
Our volunteers will be located in the sprawling capital city of Colombo, which is situated on the Indian Ocean. Colombo supplies a laid-back atmosphere, plenty of palm trees and a glimpse back to British influence with its abundance of decaying colonial buildings. Volunteers will be able to select from a variety of volunteer projects including:
- Women’s Development
- Childcare and Orphanage Assistance
- Wildlife Conservation
- Youth Sports Coaching
We warmly welcome Sri Lanka to our list of volunteer programs. For more information about our volunteer programs in Colombo, please visit our website or contact a World Endeavors Advisor:
Our new Women’s Development Program in India is one of a kind. Volunteers contribute their efforts to the work of local women’s shelters, social work agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Volunteers will have the opportunity to implement a variety of educational and confidence-building activities that are currently being organized for the benefit of adolescent girls and women of the local community. These activities are geared towards expanding the horizon of this often neglected population of the community with the purpose of giving them a sense of self-worth and empowerment.
Participants typically start their day by enjoying a traditional Indian breakfast at the accommodation facility, possibly followed by an early morning yoga session. Volunteers spend the majority of the day working at their respective projects and assisting with a variety of different tasks, including:
- Teaching conversational and basic written English
- Organizing confidence-building activities
- Teaching computer skills lessons
- Organizing recreational and awareness activities
Volunteering in the field of Women’s Development is a unique way to form close connections with community members, while providing assistance to women in difficult situations. This project addresses the unique needs and challenges that women face every day in developing countries. In addition to their valuable contributions at their project site, volunteers learn about the challenges that women face around the world and bring this knowledge home with them, shedding light on an important issue and learning how to create needed change.
